Answers with Explanation 

1. (a) Kamal Nath 

Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath was sworn in as the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on December 17, 2018. The Congress named veteran leader Kamal Nath as Madhya Pradesh’s next Chief Minister after long discussions between Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders amid a debate on the old versus the new guard.

2. (a) Ashok Gehlot

Ashok Gehlot on December 17, 2018 took oath as the Rajasthan Chief Minister for a third time; while, Sachin Pilot was sworn-in as the Deputy Chief Minister in Jaipur’s Albert Hall, Rajasthan. Gehlot and Pilot were administered the oath by Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh.

3. (b) Sachin Pilot

Miss Philippines Catriona Gray was crowned Miss Universe after she won the final round of the Miss Universe 2018 pageant, held in Bangkok, Thailand on December 17, 2018. Outgoing Miss Universe Demi Leigh Nel Peters from South Africa crowned her successor.

5. (d) PV Sindhu

Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu made history on December 16, 2018 by becoming the first Indian to win the BWF World Tour Finals. Sindhu claimed the coveted gold medal with a win over 2017 world champion Nozomi Okuhara in straight sets of 21-19, 21-17. 

6. (c) Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir has become the first state in the country to have a law banning sexual exploitation of women by those in positions of authority, having a fiduciary relationship or a public servant. The State Administrative Council (SAC) under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik has approved the ‘Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2018’ and the ‘Jammu and Kashmir Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018’.

7. (a) Nehal Chudasama

India’s Nehal Chudasama was among the 94 contestants who competed for the crown at the 67th Miss Universe pageant held in Bangkok. However, Miss India failed to make it to the Top 20 shortlisted contestants at the Miss Universe 2018 contest.

8. (a) Germany

Germany has agreed to pay one-time payments for survivors, primarily Jews, who were evacuated from Nazi Germany as children, many of whom never saw their parents again.  The German government has agreed to payments of  2,800 US Dollars to those still alive from among the 10,000 people who fled on the Kinder transport. This year is the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the transport of the children to Britain from Nazi Germany and elsewhere in Europe.   

9. (c) Amitav Ghosh

Noted English author Amitav Ghosh was honoured with 54th Jnanpith Award 2018 for his outstanding contribution towards literature. Ghosh’s novels include Shadow Lines, The Glass Palace, The Hungry Tide, and the Ibis trilogy — Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke, and Flood of Fire. 

10. (d) India 

India recently signed an ascension pact to the 30-member Trans Regional Maritime Network (T-RMN) at Italian Naval Headquarters in Rome, Italy. The pact will give India the access to information on ships which pass through the Indian Ocean region.

11. (a) Russia

On December 11, 2018, the world’s first Floating Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) ‘Akademik Lomonosov’ became operational at the Baltiysky Zavod shipyard in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is constructed by the state nuclear power firm Rosatom. 

12. (b) Brijendra Pal Singh

Brijendra Pal Singh, the director-producer of C.I.D., was nominated as the new president of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Society and Chairman of Governing Council. He will succeed Anupam Kher, who had stepped down as the chairman in October 2018 citing “international commitments”.
