Pakistan has got its first-ever woman Chief Justice of a high court. Justice Tahira Safdar was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court. She succeeds Justice Mohammad Noor Muskanzai, who attained superannuation on August 31, 2018.
2. (b) Binoy Kumar
Binoy Kumar, the 1983 batch IAS officer of the Telengana cadre, assumed charged as the Secretary of the Ministry of Steel on September 1, 2018. He had been posted as Officer on Special Duty in the Steel Ministry since May 21, 2018. He succeeded Aruna Sharma, who recently superannuated.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on August 31, 2018 inaugurated the widows’ home ‘Krishna Kutir’ at Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. Krishna Kutir is a special home for 1000 widows and is the largest ever facility of its kind created by a government organisation.

Germany sanctioned a soft loan of 120 million euros (approx Rs 990 crore) to India for National Clean Ganga Mission to strengthen sewage water treatment infrastructure in Uttarakhand. The purpose of the project is to reduce the inflow of untreated waste water in River Ganga.

Indian Railways recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GAIL India Ltd for use of environment-friendly fuel ‘Natural Gas’ in Railway workshops and production units. The purpose of the pact is to replace Industrial gases like Dissolved Acetylene, LPG, Bharat Metal Cutting Gas (BMCG) and Furnace Oil / High Speed Diesel (HSD) oil with Natural Gas.

NITI Aayog will organise MOVE: India’s First Global Mobility Summit 2018 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on September 7. The summit will constitute three designated components – the Conclave, Digital Exhibition, and Featured Events.

India’s Amit Panghal stunned the reigning Olympic champion to clinch gold. Amit beat Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov to finish at the top in the men’s Light Fly (49kg) finals. This is the first gold medal in boxing for India in this edition of the Asian Games.

Pranab Bardhan and Shibhnath Sarkar clinched the gold medal in the Bridge Men’s Pair event. With the win, Pranab Bardhan became the oldest man in Indian contingent to win a medal at the 18th Asian Games.

India with a haul of 69 medals including 15 gold recorded its best-ever performance in the history of Asian Games at the 2018 edition held in Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia. Overall, India maintained its top-10 rank by finishing eighth yet again.

The 4th International Ayurveda Congress (IAvC) was inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik in Netherlands on September 1, 2018. The Congress aims to focus on promotion and propagation of Ayurveda in Netherlands and its neighboring countries of Europe.

The Uttarakhand High Court on August 30, 2018 declared fatwas as unconstitutional and illegal. The high court banned all the religious bodies and statutory panchayats in the state from issuing fatwas. The ruling came, as the court declared illegal a fatwa banishing the family of a rape victim from their village.

The closing ceremony of the 18th Asian Games was held on September 1, 2018 in Indonesia. Indian women hockey captain Rani Rampal was India’s flag-bearer for the occasion. India ended their Asian Games 2018 campaign with the highest medal tally at the tournament ever.
